Chapter 11

“If you’re overly particular about something,” Daniel said, “tell me now. So I don’t kill the mood.”

I stood in the doorway of my bedroom with him and wondered what he might be talking about. The backup alarm clock? No, he wasn’t looking over there. The bed? There was nothing unusual about the bed—at least, not as far as I knew. The dressers? The lights? The closet door? “If you do anything that makes me uncomfortable,” I said, “I’ll let you know.”

He eased up against me, slid his arms around my waist and kissed me. Not like the guys on the gay websites with wide open mouths and ramming tongues—more like people in Hollywood movies, more like the women I’ve kissed. Especially now that he’d just shaved. It was hard to focus on the kiss, though, when I didn’t know who was supposed to do the undressing. Dr. Bergman had always cautioned me to let the woman take the lead since it would be pretty upsetting if I misread someone’s signals and peeled off her top against her wishes. But interactions with men had entirely different rules. Maybe I was supposed to wait for Daniel to undress us, since he was my guest. Or maybe it was my responsibility as the host. Or maybe we were each supposed to take care of our own buttons and belts. Or maybe it was as simple as opening a door, and whoever thought of it first got to do the undressing. If that was the case, then the responsibility would fall on me.

I wanted to ask Gator55. He might be in a chatroom, then again, he might not. Since I’d only found him that one time, I decided it wasn’t worth stopping what we were doing to go try to track him down.

Besides, I realized, Daniel had already begun working open the top button of my shirt.

“Is this okay?” he said gently.

“Why do you keep asking?” It wasn’t as if he was the one with no vocabulary for body language.

“I’d hate to—”

“I already said you didn’t have to ask, remember?”

“You did. But the website said….” he trailed off and cleared his throat.

“What website?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

He’d been talking to Gator55 too? That didn’t make any sense—Daniel already had plenty of practice at being gay. He’d known his own preferences since he was sixteen years old. “Did it have animated gifs in the sidebar?” I asked. “And a chatroom where you could post pictures of yourself?”

“Not that I remember.” He took me by the arm and guided me toward the edge of my bed, and both of us sat down. “Look, I’d hate for you to think I was angling for any kind of unfair advantage. But I needed to try to figure out what made you tick. Just because you’re not like anyone I’ve ever met before doesn’t mean it can’t be good. I need some kind of foundation to build on, though. That’s all.”

Now I was really confused. “You sound like you’re talking about memorysmithing.
